Guðni Bergsson was born in Reykjavík, Iceland on 21 july in 1965. As a teenager, Guðni was excellent in sports and found himself as one of the best in the country in both handball and football. He played as a centre back for his local club Valur in the early stages of his career. Guðni could have been an astonishing handball player but decided to choose the mother of all sports, football.
Guðni started his career for Valur, he was only 17 years old when he played his first competitive match for his childhood club. He played a total of five seasons in Iceland before being sold to Tottenham in the English first division. Tottenham was rebuilding and signed legends Paul Cascoigne and þþgary Lineker around the same time as Guðni came to Tottenham.
He played for Tottenham from 1988-1994. it was hard for him to break through in a strong Tottenham squad as he most often played when players were injured or suspended. At the end of the 1993-94 season, Guðni was loaned to his former club Valur and played 15 games in the Icelandic season. After his loan spell he was then sold to Bolton Wanderers, a club with a lot of history and had been struggling for the past few years.
Guðni became an instant fan favourite, especially after his debut where he came on as a substitute for Scott Green in a match against Liverpool in the 1995 Football League Cup Final on Wembley. Steve McManaman had been extraordinary and Guðni´s introduction to the match gave Bolton fans as his first touch was a cross to Alan Thompson who scored.
Guðni got relegated two times in his career and promoted three times, all with Bolton. He spent a total of four seasons in the Division One (now Championship) and four seasons in the Premiership.
You could say that Guðni is a club legend as he played for the club for eight years and captained the team for several seasons. It would be hard to find one Bolton supporter who doesn´t like him. He was loyal and a true leader on and off the pitch, both for Bolton and for the Icelandic National Team where he managed to get 80 caps under his belt and captained the team for most of the games.
