UEFA Champions League 2007-08


The 2007-08 UEFA Champions League was the 26th annual season since it as rebranded in 1992, and 53rd tournament overall. The final was held in Moscow, Russia, between Manchester United and Chelsea FC, it was the first ever all English final.

There were played 125 matches in the UEFA Champions League that season and there were 330 goals scored, an average of 2.64 goals scored per game. United scored 20 goals in 13 games and only conceded 6 goals.

The journey for Manchester United started with a victory away against Portuguese side, Sporting CP, and 4 more wins followed before a 1-1 draw against Roma. United didn´t lose a game that season in the Champions League. The Red Devils impressed a lot of people and pundits with their defensive solidity with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic forming a deadly center-back partnership, and the brilliance of Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo went on to be the top scorer in the competition with eight goals.


Chelsea performed just as well as Manchester United that campaign bur were just unlucky in the final. The Blues scored 20 goals, just as many as United and only conceded 7 goals in the tournament. The tournament started with a shocking draw against Rosenborg from Norway. Chelsea finshed on top of their group with 12 points, 3 wins and 3 draws. Chelsea only lost two games throughout the campaign, the final against Manchester United and against Fenerbache in the quarter-finals 1st leg, losing 2-1 away but won the 2nd leg 2-0 and 3-2 on aggregate. The final was thrilling, both sides created chances in the pouring rain, making a lot more dramatic. The score was 1-1 in half-time after Cristiano Ronaldo scored his eight goal of the tournament with an outstanding header and Frank Lampard stepped up and equalized right before the referee Ľuboš Micheľ from Slovakia, blew the whistle for half-time. The score was still 1-1 after 90 minutes had been played so the match had to go to extra-time, where Micheľ had tnemanja o give the red card to the Ivorian striker, Didier Drogba after he slapped Nemanja Vidic in the face. The game was still unsettled after extra-time so the match had to go to penalties where Manchester United won 6-5 after Edwin Van Der Sar saved the last penalty from Nicolas Anelka. Van Der Sar was chosen the Man of the Match.
