There are many footballers who have a good sense of humour and don’t take themselves too seriously. That sort of personality is very popular among football fans but can sometimes be looked as unprofessional by some hardcore fans and some managers. In this article I will go through the funniest footballers in the history of the Premier League.
Peter Crouch
The English tall-man is very active on the social media website, Twitter, and he is not afraid to
make fun of himself. Here are a few examples:
In Eidur Gudjohnsen’s mini- series he said that Peter Crouch was the funniest player he had ever played with, and judging from his hilarious tweets and statements you can definitely see why Eidur believes that. Peter Crouch is also known for his robot dance celebration which was very popular with the young football fans who replicated the celebration every time they scored a goal.
David Luiz
Not only is he a Champions League and Premier League winner but he is also an incredibly funny and positive guy. Everytime we see David Luiz behind the scenes he is in a good mood. His child-like behaviour is infectious and you can’t help but smile everytime he talks.
Apparently, his favourite thing to do when he is not playing football is to have fun with his team-mates, weather it is interrupting them during interviews, play table tennis or dance with them.
Here below is a video showcasing the Brazilian’s funniest moments: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7GABnWZFboI
However, in the video you can not see what is in my opinion one of the funniest moments in football. It was during a press conference when the-then Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho, was asked a serious question about the Chelsea squad when all of a sudden you can hear David Luiz’s voice shouting in another room: “Hijo de puta!” which means: “Son of a bitch”. The timing and the way he said it was perfect and it made the Portuguese manager laugh hysterically.
Mario Balotelli
Some people look at the Italian’s behaviour ad inappropriate and stupid, and something that has prevented him from fulfilling his potential, but colorful characters is something that football needs. His most famous instances are when he visited an all female prison, lit fireworks in his his house and when he was unable to put on a regular training vest. The first two instances can be looked at as weird and stupid but the last one is very funny. Another humorous yet strange moment in his life was when he scored the first goal in Man City’s 6-1 victory against Man Utd at Old Trafford, and he celebrated by revealing a shirt he was wearing underneath the Man City jersey that said: “Why always me?” (PremierLeague.com) He is also incredibly known for his celebration for Italy when he scored in the Euros 2012 when he took off his shirt.

Robert Huth
Despite being a pretty serious guy the German defender and Premier League winner has a pretty good sense of humour. His sense of humour is very similar to Peter Crouch i.e. he doesn’t take himself too seriously and he knows how to make fun of himself. Here are a few examples:
In this picture he is parodying Alexis Sanchez’ tweet when he announced his recovery after his game against Leicester. The 1.91 m defender was obviously not really in pain and the ambulance emoji at the end of his tweet is an intentional exaggeration.
Here below are more tweets showcasing a great amount of sarcasm that makes David Brent from The Office seem like an ordinary fellow:
Will we see more of Robert Huth’s clever tweets in the future? I guess we will see.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic
Class, confidence and power are words that come up when you think about the “lion of football”, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but one word that you can add to that list is: funny. As many people know, Zlatan recently joined LA Galaxy and he has already made a huge impact on the squad. He announced his arrival for the people of Los Angeles by taking out an entire page on the LA Times and on the page it said: “Dear Los Angeles, You’re welcome” and on the bottom was his signature.
His recent humorous moment of his career was when he was a guest on the Jimmy Kimmel show in California. During the interview he said some rather funny things like: “I’m not a typical Swedish guy but I put Sweden on the map” and when talking about people recognizing him in public he said: “It is my own fault because if you play the way I do…”. When Jimmy Kimmel asked Zlatan about his other teammates being in his shadow, Zlatan answered: “No, I make them superstars”. His most interesting line during the interview was: “A World Cup without me wouldn’t be a World Cup”.
Here below you can see Zlatan’s interview with Jimmy Kimmel:
My personal favourite line of his was when he was an AC Milan player and he was being interviewed shortly before a training session. The interview was interrupted by someone who told him that he had to go on the field. However, Zlatan wanted to finish the interview and then said: “Training starts when I say so”. When reading what he said it might sound disrespectful but when you watch the video of him saying it you can obviously see that he was joking.
Conclusion
I decided to not rank the following players but instead let the reader decide for him (or her-)self what their number one pick is. The players that stand out are: Peter Crouch and Zlatan Ibrahimovic as they seem to be the funniest out of the five named. When writing this article I learned that footballers can be very witty and funny and they don’t take themselves too seriously. It seems that nowadays we see a lot of young players with a lot of ego but hopefully that will soon change.
