Season in Review : Top 6

Manchester City

F**king hell, is the only thing that can be said about City’s season. Well we can talk about their humble start to the season with 7 points from their first 3 matches but it was really in their 4th game that we really saw that they would be the favourites to win the league after winning 5-0 against Liverpool. The moment most people realised it was going to be City’s year was after a 1-0 win away to then reigning champions Chelsea where a Kevin De Bruyne strike sank the blues in what was a truly impressive performance. Before the start of the season, Guardiola brought in new players for an absurd amount of money, including three full backs for £140m and the new world’s most expensive goalkeeper in Ederson. Man City went on an insane winning streak of 18 games in the league, setting a new record and only lost their first match in the Prem in a 4-3 loss at Anfield in mid-january. City have kept their form going with impressive performances from players such as David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling and were confirmed champions last weekend after Manchester United lost at home to WBA. In a way the season may also be a bit of a failure for City, with them being knocked out of the FA Cup by Wigan and the Champions League quarter-final by Liverpool, but overall, a Premier League title and a Carabao Cup is pretty impressive stuff and the citizens still have a chance to set more records, congratulations City!

Manchester United

It’s been a strange season for Man Utd in that the fans have been very unhappy with Mourinho’s style of play, even though they sit in second place with 74 points with 86 being possible if they win their four remaining matches. This would normally be enough to win the league, but Man City’s dominance has been unnatural for the league and United fans are having none of it and after a Champions League exit in the round of 16 by the hands of Sevilla, United fans have had enough of Mourinho. The apparent beef between Mourinho and Paul Pogba has led to speculation of the Frenchman leaving the club as well as United looking toothless in front of goal in recent matches. However, they still have an FA cup semi-final to play and could take a trophy as well as they have cemented their place in next season’s Champions League. New signings have been up and down, Matic probably being the most important as well as Lukaku, but players like Victor Lindelof have got to do better.

Liverpool

The club that have been struggling for about ten years for consistency have probably had their most stellar season in a long time. The front three of Mané, Firmino and Salah has been absolutely ridiculous and the signing of Mo Salah has to be the deal of the century. Having an alright first half to the season, Liverpool’s season really took off after Coutinho’s departure to Catalunya as the team has easily swept aside great teams with blistering attacking football. Liverpool currently sit in 3rd and are pretty safe in the battle for a CL spot but their real journey is in the Champions League where they brushed aside Man City in the quarter-final and face Roma in the semis, that will however be difficult as Roma knocked out Barcelona. In conclusion, Liverpool’s season has been above expectations.

Spurs

Accused of bottling it when the moment is big but after an underwhelming first half of the season, Spurs have been on fire in the second half and players such as Eriksen, Alli and Son have delivered, not to mention Harry Kane. It looks like however yet another trophyless season for the lilywhites as they got knocked out of the FA Cup this weekend by Man Utd, but the future for the club gets brighter every year and if Danny Levy can keep hold of Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs’ biggest players by paying them more, Spurs will definitely be a team for the future and with a new home ground on the way,

Spurs fans should be excited.

Chelsea

Last season’s champions have had a disappointing campaign and currently sit in 5th place in real danger of missing out on Champions League next season. Chelsea started the season pretty well beside a first round shock defeat to Burnley and found themselves battling for 2nd place in December, however in the new year Chelsea looked broken and the focus of boss Antonio Conte looked like it was off the pitch and was often taking shots at Chelsea’s board for not being good enough in the transfer market and bringing in the wrong players. Even though Chelsea will likely finish 5th they still have a chance of silverware this season when they face Man Utd in the FA Cup final.

Arsenal

It’s kind of absurd to think that Arsene Wenger will not be managing Arsenal next season but it comes as no surprise that the Frenchman will leave the club in the summer, as fans have been calling for his sacking for years now and has the famous #WengerOut now finally been put into action. That being said, Arsenal have had a disastrous season, as they sit 6th with their worst point tally in the Wenger era and having lost their best player the last few seasons in Alexis Sanchez to arch rivals Man United, however, many will be hoping for Wenger’s sake that Arsenal can get their hands on the Europa League title and get at least some silverware this season other than the Community Shield. We will most likely see a much different Arsenal team next season and who will be their manager, only time will tell.
