Both Manchester United and Chelsea had a really good Champions League campaign as they both topped their groups and without a loss. Cristiano Ronaldo was influential for Manchester United scoring six goals in their road to the final. Also both of the teams were battling at the top of the table that year, but United came on top in the end and United now had a chance to win the double.

The game was held in Moscow in Russia on May 21 in rainy conditions. In a feisty afair, United took the lead after 26 minutes as Ronaldo grabbed his 42nd goal of the season. United were the better side for the first 40 minutes but Chelsea levelled things up in the 44th minute as Essien took a longshot that hit the back of Vidic´s legs and then fell kindly in the path of Lampard who passed the ball into the net and the score was 1-1 during halftime.
the second half was thrilling but chelsea always had the upper hand and had a chance to steal the win when Drogba hit the post with a fantastic shot. at full time the scores were 1-1.
Extra-time started with a bang as Lampard gets the ball in Uniteds box and turns and strikes but only for the ball to hit the woodwork again. Just a few minutes after Chelsea´s chance Patrice Evra bursts through Chelsea´s defence and lays it off for Giggs who was denied on the line by Chelsea´s captain John Terry. Things got a little heated in the end of extra-time as Drogba and Vidic had words and most players on the pitch run towards them to stop them from going at each other, but Drogba had other plans as he slapped Vidic in the face and was immedietaly sent off and Chelsea were down ten men for the last few minutes. Next up was penalties.
It started off well for both teams as they both scored from their first two penalties. Ronaldo stepped up next, but was denied by Petr Cech. Lampard, Hargreaves, Cole and Nani all scored from the spot and to win it for Chelsea, John Terry stepped up and slipped and struck the ball onto the post. Anderson and Giggs both scored in sudden death for United and Kalou for Chelsea. Next up was Anelka who had to score to keep his team in the game but was denied by a matchwinning save by Van der Saar. Mixed emotions at full-time as United were crowned champions of Europe for the third time in their history.
