Everton and Liverpool met each other in a derby game last Friday in the FA cup. This is an iconic derby game in English football also known as the Merseyside derby, sometimes called the friendly derby. The name was given because of these giant clubs are from Merseyside, Liverpool. This matchup is the longest running derby in history of English football, having been played numerous times since the 1962/63 season.
On january 5th the two rivals met in an exciting game in the 3rd round in the FA cup. The game ended with a last minute winner by Virgil van Dijk in his debut for Liverpool. The game’s final score was 2-1 with milner giving Liverpool the lead in the first half from a penalty. Our man Gylfi Sigurðsson tied up the score with a well placed finish from outside the box, Karius had no chance. There was a controversial incident between Liverpool striker Roberto Firmino and the young Everton defender Mason Holgate where there are some racial slur speculations between the two players. In the 87th minute of the match Liverpool get a corner taken by Oxlade-Chamberlain. The newly singed defender Virgil Van Dijk takes an agressive run into the box and heads the ball into the net.
