José Mourinho

José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix, known as José Mourinho is a Portuguese football manager and a former football player. He is the manager of the English Premier league side Manchester United.

José Mourinho was born on 26. January 1963 in a large middle-class family. He is the son of Félix Mourinho and Júlia Carrajola dos Santos. His father was a former footballer and earned one cap for Portugal. He played at teams such as Os Belenenses and Vitória de Setúbal. His mother was a school teacher with an affluet background as her uncle funded the construction of the football stadium for the club Vitoría de Setúbal. The fall of António de Oliveira Salazar's Estado Novo regime in April 1974 led the family to lose every property exept for one in nearby Palmela.

José joined the Belenenses youth team as he wanted to follow in his fathers´s footsteps. He played for Rio Ave, Belenenses and Sesimbra on the senior level. His football playing career didn´t last long as he wasn´t fast enough and lacked power so he chose to focus on being a football coach instead.

After having a few small coaching jobs in the early 1990s. Then in 1992 a big opportunity came as he was offered to become a translator for a newly appointed Sporting CP manager, Bobby Robson, he needed a local coach to work as his interpreter. Mourinho began discussing tactics with Robson I his interpreting role. In December 1993, Sporting Lisbon sacked Bobby Robson. When Porto hired Robson as their new head coach, Mourinho moved with him, continuing coaching and interpreting with the players. Porto went on to dominate Portuguese football with Robson and Mourinho leading the way. Reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League in 1993-94 season and winning the league in 1994-95 and 1995-96 seasons.

After two years at Porto, the dynamic duo moved to Barcelona in 1996. Mourinho became a big part of the club. Translating in press conferences, planning training sessions and analyzing the opposition. After the season, Robson moved club but this time, Mourinho didn´t follow him. He stayed for five seasons and then moved back home to Portugal, taking over Benfica.

In September 2000, Mourinho was hired as the new manager of Benfica. After a few weeks in charge, his former mentor, Sir Bobby Robson offered him to be his assistant at Newcastle United but Mourinho refused. Robson was so desperate to get Mourinho that he said he´d step down after two years and let Mourinho take charge of the club, but Mourinho still refused as he knew that Robson would never step down from the club he loved. In December 2000, Mourinho got fired as Manuel Vilarinho got elected president of the club and he wanted ex-Benfica defender Toni in charge.

In July 2001, Mourinho found a new job as the manager of União de Leiria. He enjoyed a decent success with an unbeaten run of 8 matches in the league from November 2001 to January 2002. They were in 4th position one point ahead of Porto and one point behind Benfica. Mourinho´s success with the team gained attention from larger Portuguese teams.

Mourinho was hired as the manager of Porto on 23rd of January 2002. At that time, Porto were kind of struggling, they were 5th in the league and last in their group in the Champions league. Mourinho´s first season in charge was good and he promised he´d win the league the next season, and he did. Mourinho won the league in his first full season with Porto, 11 points ahead of his former team, Benfica. In the same season, 2002-03, he also won the Taça de Portugal and the UEFA Cup final against Celtic. When he was at Porto, Mourinho gained many attention for the amazing work he did while he was there. In his two years at Porto, he won the Primeira Liga twice, the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Champions League. All his success earned him a move to Chelsea.

When at the press conference upon joining Chelsea, he said, "Please don't call me arrogant, but I'm European champion and I think I'm a special one," which resulted in the media dubbing him "The Special One". Mourinho came in by storm in the Premier League winning the title with a record breaking 95 points, and the fewest goals conceded with only 15. He also won the league cup against Liverpool but lost to them in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Liverpool went on to win the tournament. In his second season he won the Premier League for the second time in two seasons, this was his fourth domestic title in a row. Mourinho unexpectedly left Chelsea on 20. September 2007 by “mutual consent” although there had been some disagreements with the Russian owner, Roman Abramovich.

On 2. June 2008, Mourinho was appointed as the new manager of Internazionale. Mourinho stayed for only two seasons at Inter with an amazing success, winning the league and the Supercoppa Italia in his first season and winning the treble in his latter season. As UEFA was pushing larger clubs in Europe to play more homegrown players, Mourinho played the 18 year old striker Mario Balotelli and promoted the Italian defender, Davide Santon.

In 2010, Mourinho was announced as Pellegrini´s successor at Real Madrid and became the 11th manager in 7 years to manage Real Madrid. In his 3 years at the Spanish side, Mourinho only won three trophies, the La Liga in 2011-12 season, Copa del Rey in 2010-11 season and Supercoppa de España in 2012. He became the only coach who has won the national super cups in four different European countries. This also made Mourinho the first manager in history to win every domestic title, the league championship, cup, super cup and league cup in four European leagues. In Mourinho´s last season he was criticized a lot, for example when he poked Barcelona´s assistant coach, Tito Vilanova in the eye during El Clasico. and made some controversial decisions such as benching Iker Casillas in 2013. Mourinho also didn´t have the best relationship with the media and some players at the club. He frequently hinted that Barcelona received favorable treatment from UEFA. After the 2013 Copa del Rey loss against rivals Atletico Madrid, Mourinho called the 2012-13 season “the worst of my career”. Three days later, it was announced that the Portuguese manager would be leaving the Los Blancos at the end of the season.

In the summer of 2013, Mourinho was appointed the manager of Chelsea for the second time in his career. In his first season, Chelsea finished third in the league and and lost in the semi-finals in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid. The Spanish side would then lose in the final against rivals Real Madrid. The second season was much better for “The Special One” as Chelsea won the Premier League, only losing 3 games the whole season. His 3rd season didn´t start well for Mourinho and the Blues as they lost 9 games out of 16 in the league and also the fact that Eva Carneiro sued Chelsea for banning her to attend matches and do her job, even though she´d still be the head doctor. Eva Carneiro ran onto the pitch in stoppage time to treat Hazard over an apparent injury in a 2-2 draw against Swansea City. Mourinho stated that she lacked judgement and understanding of the game and publicly criticized her and the medical staff. Jose was pissed and they exchanged a few well chosen words on the sideline. Eva left the club 6 weeks after the incident.

Just after the 2015-16 season, Mourinho was appointed the manager at Manchester United. He became the first Man Utd manager to win a major trophy in their debut season with the club, winning the EFL Cup and the Europa League.

Jose Mourinho has accomplished a lot of things in his career and won honours, both team and individual. Such as the Champions League, Europa League, Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and Primeira Liga with teams and as individual awards he´s won include the Portuguese coach of the century, Serie A Manager of the Season and UEFA Manager of the Year and many, many more.
