Lovren is not really loved by Liverpool fans but his recent comments about Liverpool’s chance in the Champions League made him a little more popular among Liverpool fans. Lovren was asked about how he felt about Liverpool having a shot at the Champions League trophy. He answered calmly ‘of course we have a chance, don’t sleep on us. We have a lot of talent on our side and I like that we are not mentioned in the conversation to win it all’. Now is he crazy or does Liverpool have a legitimate shot? Looking at the teams left like Barcelona, Manchester City and Bayern Munich you would immediately write them off but don’t do that just yet. History has shown us that anything is possible in football.

Liverpool beat Porto 5-0 in the first leg away from home and ended Porto’s twenty something undefeated run at home. That tie is as good as over so Liverpool are basically through to the quarterfinals. Liverpool as any team could get lucky in the draw and avoid the big dogs. Looking back at the winners of this competition we have seen a defensive Porto side under the management of Jose Mourinho win it against all odds and more recently Mourinho took a good but not great Inter Milan team all the way. Saying all that of course Liverpool won the cup after one of the greatest finals in football history in 2005 against A.C. Milan. No one expected Liverpool to win the whole thing then like now. They faced a much more talented team in the final with players like Andrea Pirlo, Alessandro Nesta and Filippo Inzaghi. Liverpool where down 3-0 after the first half and everyone knew that the game was over but Liverpool did not give up. The comeback started with a header from the skipper Steven Gerrard. Two minutes later Smicer narrowed the lead down to one goal and in the 60th minute Liverpool got a penalty. Xabi Alonso stepped up to take it, Dida saved it but Alonso managed to score on the rebound. The game was set and matched and heading to extra time. Nothing happened there and it went to penalties. Milan missed there first two and Liverpool where up 2-0. Then Milan scored two in a row but Liverpool missed one of the next two. It was 3-2 and Liverpool where one penalty from winning the Champions League for the fifth time. Shevchenko stepped up but Dudek saved it and Liverpool completed one of the, if not greatest comeback in football history. So I would not write them off just yet. Lovren might just have a point. Being the underdog can often help you in this sort of competition.
